Barbarians of the Bay

Jean-Philippe Tanguay lives and breathes hockey, and dreams of becoming a players’ agent. He idolizes his cousin Yves, a former NHL player, now with the amateur team Barbarians of the Bay. When the team qualifies for the Canadian championships, Yves invites JP to tag along to Thunder Bay. The cousins seize on the event as a chance to advance their careers, and embark on a road trip that will show them what it takes to realize one’s dreams.

VINCENT BIRON

Vincent has directed 5 short films including Little Flowers, awarded Best Canadian Short at TIFF in 2010. A few years later, A Delusion of Grandeur (2015) was selected by multiple festivals worldwide including Clermont-Ferrand. In 2016, his debut feature, PRANK, premiered at the Venice International Film Critic’s Week, and his second feature, Barbarians of the Bay (2019), was released in 30 theatres across Quebec. In addition to being a director, Vincent is an accomplished cinematographer who has worked with many prominent directors including Matthew Rankin and Denis Côté.

MARC-ANTOINE RIOUX

Marc-Antoine began his screenwriting career after studying arts and humanities. After his first short film, Mauvaise, was selected at Fantasia IFF, he moved on to writing features and co-wrote PRANK (2016), a cheeky teen comedy that premiered in Venice and won the Gilles-Carle Prize at Les Rendez-vous Québec Cinéma. His second feature, Barbarians of the Bay was released in theatres across Quebec in the fall of 2019. Marc-Antoine’s most recent short film collaboration, Heart Bomb, opened Fantasia 2019 and enjoyed life on the festival circuit. Marc-Antoine now has several new projects on the go, including a comedy (Monsieur Thibault) a horror flick (La Guérite) and an action movie (Operation Sandbox). Though he is hell-bent on delivering fresh and entertaining stories, this fervent passion pales in comparison to his devotion to the work of David Mamet and the Montreal Canadiens.

ERIC K. BOULIANNE

Eric is a strange and elusive creature known as a screenwriter. He has written and co-written several short films including Little Brother (2014), which screened at the Cannes Semaine de la Critique, as well as five features: PRANK (2016) premiered at the Venice Film Festival; Father and Guns 2, the sequel to a successful comedy, was the highest-grossing Canadian film in 2017; and Compulsive Liar was just as successful at the box office in 2019. That same year, Eric wrote the features Before We Explode and Barbarians of the Bay. He has also written for TV shows like SNL Québec, Web Thérapie, and Les Pêcheurs. He is most likely to be found deep inside his lair, behind a computer screen, wearing little to no clothing.

ALEXANDRE AUGER

Alexandre graduated from the Université du Québec à Montréal and worked as a film editor before breaking into screenwriting with the short film Gaspé Cooper (2013). He has since written the short films Not Fat Sophie (2014), Heart Bomb (2019), and Landgraves (2020), as well as the feature films Yo (2014), which screened at Rotterdam; PRANK (2016), which played at Venice, TIFF, and BAFICI ; and Barbarians of the Bay (2019). He is currently working on several projects including the feature film Two by Four, directed by Lawrence Côté-Collins, and Nacer, helmed by Mathieu Denis. In parallel with his screenwriting career, Alexandre is a script doctor who enjoys advising fellow screenwriters and supporting their creative process. He is also a film lecturer at his alma mater, and in 2018, he joined the Board of Directors of the French-Canadian writers’ guild (SARTEC.)
